Monument record MDO49640 - Medieval or post medieval woodland boundary, Little Elias Copse, Alton Pancras

Please read our .

Summary

A bank and ditched enclosure is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery encircling Little Elias Copse. The bank is internal to the ditch suggesting a defensive structure to keep things out rather than a stock enclosure (see also MDO49704 for a similar enclosure). It is likely to be a medieval or post medieval woodland boundary although its association with a field system potentially originating in the prehistoric period means that an earlier origin cannot be ruled out. The enclosure was digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
