Monument record MDO49581 - Medieval ridge and furrow, strip field, Shillingstone

Areas of ridge and furrow cultivation interspersed by linear banked field boundaries are visible as earthworks on a northeast facing spur of Shillingstone Hill, Shillingstone, on aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery. The features cover an area of around 46 hectares and probably form part of a former medieval field system, possibly an area of former strip fields. They were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.

Areas of ridge and furrow cultivation interspersed by linear banked field boundaries are visible as earthworks on a northeast facing spur of Shillingstone Hill, Shillingstone, on aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1954; NMR 1971; EA 2018). The features cover an area of around 46 hectares and probably form part of a former medieval field system, possibly an area of former strip fields. They were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project. Not every feature remains visible on lidar, suggesting a degree of 20th century loss.
