Full Description
Areas of ridge and furrow cultivation interspersed by linear banked and ditched field boundaries are visible as earthworks to the southeast of Shillingstone on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1947; EA 2018). The features probably form part of an area of former medieval strip field system alongside MDO49541, the two areas divided by Holloway Lane, a lane of probable medieval origin. The features might include earlier boundaries of potentially later prehistoric origin. The OS Epoch 1 map of c1880s (OS c1880) shows historic fields divided by the railway, suggesting the field system might once have continued to the northwest (recorded under MDO49559 and MDO49560). The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
