Full Description
Areas of ridge and furrow cultivation interspersed by linear banked and ditched field boundaries are visible as earthworks to the southeast of Shillingstone on Environment Agency lidar imagery (EA 2018). The features probably form part of an area of former medieval strip field system alongside MDO49560, the two areas divided by Holloway Lane, a lane of probable medieval origin. The OS Epoch 1 map of c1880s (OS c1880) shows historic fields divided by the railway, suggesting the field system might once have continued to the northeast (recorded under MDO49541 and MDO49561). The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
