Full Description
Areas of ridge and furrow cultivation interspersed by linear banked and ditched field boundaries are visible as earthworks to the east of Shillingstone on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1947; EA 2018). The features probably form part of an area of former medieval field system, which might include later features. Within one banked enclosure to the northeast of the church are two sub-rectilinear mounds, visible on lidar imagery, that are of uncertain origin but which might be medieval house platforms. The OS Epoch 1 map of c1880s shows historic fields divided by the railway, suggesting the field system might once have continued to the northeast. The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
