Full Description

Linear banks and ditches forming part of a probable later prehistoric field system are visible as soilmarks and earthworks to the west of Ranston, Iwerne Courtney or Shroton, on aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (OS 1982; EA 2018). The features may include later lynchets of potentially medieval origin, particularly within Coombe Wood and around the edges of the Stepleton spur of Hambledown Hill, also a possible area of medieval ridge and furrow within Coombe Bottom (although this might alternatively be the remains of earlier field boundaries), heavily truncated by ploughing. The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
