An 'Old Chalk Pit' is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map on the northern edge of Hill Wood, Alton Pancras (OS 1888 (1)). It is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery and was digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM Project; it is one of a group of several hollows in the vicinity, all considered to be the result of post medieval extraction.
