Monument record MDO49023 - Medieval or post-medieval burials in the churchyard, St Mary's Church, Beaminster

Please read our .

Summary

Fourteen uncoffined burials were recorded by Terrain Archaeology during digging of a new drainage trench in 2024. No evidence of coffins could be seen, so it seems likely that the bodies were in shrouds; this and the relatively shallow depth of the burials at less than one metre deep, suggests a medieval or post-medieval date. Three burials below the floor of the South West Vestry probably pre-date its construction in the late sixteenth century.
