Summary

Full Description

The site of a former Priory Orchard is marked on the 1888 Ordnance Survey 1:500 map (1). This place name is not recorded on the Tithe map and apportionment (2). Priory Orchard, located on the west side of St Michael's Lane, is named in a deed of 1750 and land tax certificate of 1778 (3).

The area contained in T.1. comprises of allotment gardens to the south and industrial buildings to the north. No traces of antiquity were observed in the vicinity. Old maps and tithe maps were not available at the time of field investigation, and no information regarding a priory or Priory Orchard was obtained. <4>

The 'priory' may be the chapel and later Munden's chantry of St Michael <5> <6>.
