‘BENVILLE, DORSET. NGR ST 553040 on the Beaminster to Evershot road. The cast-iron post is painted red (very faint and peeling on 3.2.96). the fingerboards are painted white with black lettering. A finial was shown on earlier photographs but it has presumably been stolen. It was first described as ‘Red Post’ on the OS 1:2500 County Series Dorset XXI.13, 2nd edition, 1903. Previous editions described it as ‘Guide Post’. It is very close to a number of parish boundaries.’
