Full Description
Blackham, Arthur, 1997, The Red Fingerposts of Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall and Hampshire. An investigation (Unpublished document). SDO20827.
‘POYNTINGTON, DORSET. National Grid Reference (hereafter NGR) ST450199 on the B3145 Sherborne to Wincanton road, where the old coach road to Bath forks off for Coton Denham. The road was also part of the HARROWAY. Cast-iron post and finger-boards, all in red but with white lettering. A finial gives the map reference and the words RED POST. In the first tow editions of the 1:2500 OS Series Dorset VI.5 of 1887 and 1901 the post was described as ‘Guide Post’. It was not until the Provisional National Grid Sheet 30/89 published in 1948 that it is shown as ‘Red Post’. It is about 200 yards north of a county and a parish boundary.’
