Wreck event and documentary evidence:

The JANAKIN of Amsterdam was a Dutch merchantman ‘driven by wind upon rocks and sands and there bruised and broken’ near Portland, in late 1630 or early 1631. (1)

'17th March. No. 742: About a ship called the JANAKIN of Amsterdam - Whereas a Commission is awarded out of his Majesties high Courte of Admiraltie to Sir John Strangwich, knight, Edward Sydenham, esquire, and Robert Napper, esquire, as also to John Gardiner, John Blachforde and Henry Cuttance, marchants, and to James Smither, gentleman, or to anie twoe of them, for delivering and restoring or causing to be delivered and restored, to Daniel Wybrants and Jacob Dirickson Soutman, marchant of Amsterdam, or to their lawfull assigne, by indenture, a Ship called the JANAKIN of Amsterdam belonging to them and their partners, which Ship was cast away near Portlande in the County of Dorset, having been driven by winde upon Rocks or Sands and there bruised and broken, and for delivering and restoring, or causing to be delivered or restored, in lyke maner to the saide Daniel Wybrants and Jacob Dirickson Soutman or their lawful assigne, all the tackle and other furniture and all and every the goods which were in the sayde ship at the time of her casting away. and have been since recovered. These are therefore to will and require you and every of you to whom it may concerne to be ayding and assisting unto the bearer or bearers hereof in the full and due execucion of the contents of the said Commission and of every parte thereof, and wee further require that you omit not to doe the same in any liberties, freedomes or privileged places whatsoever, as you will answere the contrarie at your perills...'
