Monument record MDO47881 - Salisbury and Yeovil Railway

Summary
The Salisbury and Yeovil Railway was opened in 1859 from Salisbury to Gillingham,and reached Yeovil in 1860. There it joined the Bristol and Exeter main line at Hendford. Yeovil remained a terminus for only a few weeks, the LSWR's line from Exeter to Yeovil opening 6 weeks later. This completed a faster through route from London to Exeter via Salisbury. Originally built as a single track line with room for doubling, which commenced in 1861 and was completed in 1870.
