Full Description
<1> Hawkes, J, 1996, Proposed Development at Antells Farm, Stour Provost, Dorset. Archaeological Assessment. (Unpublished document). SDO12576.
‘The quarry depicted at the western end of Yarn Barton in 1842 was perhaps for the lessee’s private use. There appear to have been many small quarries exploiting the limestone around the village, and there was a manorial customer recited in 1648 (DCRO Ph 599c, f22) as follows (spelling modernised): ‘We present of ancient custom we ought to have a quarry on the farm ground for any tenants to draw stones for building and repairing houses … And further that all tenants shall take stone in the quarry acre while there be any to be had, and that when that quarry ceases the farmer [i.e. the lessee of the demesne] is to appoint another quarry acre, the tenants levelling the ground of the quarry acre ploughable.’ Thus small-scale quarries were apparently opened up on the demesne, exhausted, and then the site restored to agricultural use.’
