‘It is possible that the field-name ‘Butts’ refers to land abutting strips in the open-field. A more likely explanation, however, is that it was provided by the manorial lord for archery practice. Butts for this purpose were established in many villages, often close to the church, following legislation in 1477/8 and later, that ll men in the parish should practice archery each Sunday (Tate 1969, 300, note 15). The name ‘Butts’ is recorded in the 1747 terrier, and also, as a ‘close called Butts’ in a survey of the demesne taken in 1702 (DCRO Ph 559c, f27).’
