Full Description
A Medieval road left Dorchester by the now-familiar road over the Mohun Bridges and ran first to Charminster (SY 672928) where it crossed the river and climbed up the ridge, continuing along Charminster Down by a line now followed by a parish boundary, to a point north-east of Grimstone Down settlement (SY 69 NW 38). Here it changed direction and formed part of the Abbotsbury - Cerne road. The Medieval road probably embodied a pre-Roman trackway to Wrackleford and Maiden Castle (see SY 69 NE 44) and also a track to Dorchester, after its foundation in Roman times. (1)
