Summary

Prehistoric finds from the vicinity of Hod Hill include a Neolithic flint axehead with ground edge; a Neolithic flint chisel with ground sides; 2 fragments of perforated quartzite maceheads; a variety of scrapers; a Bronze Age bronze spearhead; and some Iron Age pottery. These items are dispersed among the British Museum and Dorset County Museum, Dorchester.

Full Description

[MARGINAL] Ne. finds from HOD HILL and neighbourhood.

a. Flint axe, with a ground edge, from the hillfort: now in the DURDEN Colln.
b. Ne flint chisel, with straight ground sides 5 1/2" long, 1 3/8" wide, from HOD HILL: now in the DURDEN Colln.
c. 2 fragments of perforated quartzite pebble maceheads, one from HOD HILL, the other from that neighbourhood: both now in the DURDEN Colln. 16
d. Scrapers - unclassified - in the EVANs Colln., from HOD HILL, and mention is also made of heaps of sling stones found at the hill.1
e. Flint axe, ground, length 7.7", width 1.5" - 2.6", thickness 1.1". Presented to Dorset. Co. Museum by Mr. F. Coward From HOD HILL. Acc. No. 1907.2.1.2
f. Specimens of tankard handles of IA 'C' type from HOD HILL in the British Museum.34
g. Small bronze socketed spearhead. Length 5 ins. Acc.No 1931.8.1.5. <1-3>

The exact provenance of particular finds is not known. Apart from the objects in the DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM, the finds from the DURDEN and EVANS collections are probably in the British Museum. <4>
