Full Description

Lady Margaret Beaufort, 1441-1509, founded the Grammer School, afterwards known as Queen Elizabeth's Free Grammer School. In 1562 a fund for the administration of the school was provided from a tithe rent charge, and a governing body of twelve persons formed. <1> <3>

Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School was founded (by Margaret Beaufort) in 1496 and re-endowed by Queen Elizabeth in 1563. The present building was erected in 1851. It is assumed to stand upon the site of the original building. <4>

Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School was established in 1563 and has twice been rebuilt. The original building was burned down and rebuilt before 1640. The School was again rebuilt in 1849 in 17th century style and possibly incorporating parts of the earlier building. It is of two storeys, built of brick with ashlar dressings and tiled roofs. <6>
