Full Description

(SY 577851). A Parliamentarian force took by storm the Cavalier garrison at Abbotsbury during the Civil War in the first week of November 1644. Colonel James Strangways and his regiment held the Manor House and adjoining church for the king when they were attacked by Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper who had marched with a Parliamentarian brigade from Dorchester. The church was quickly taken and the house beseiged, which after several hours of fierce fighting was set alight, forcing the Royalists to surrender. The powder store exploded destroying the building and killing a large number of Parliamentarian soldiers as they plundered.<1>
