Full Description

Eighteen iron currency bars were found on the 23rd May 1882 whilst a 'drag' was clearing a field 2/3 mile due west of Weatherby Castle (SY 807963 - see SY 89 NW 7) and not far from the road which connects the camp with the high road leading to Dorchester. (1)

Four iron currency bars from Milborne St Andrew, exhibited at Dorset County Museum, formerly belonged to Rev. Nigel Gresley (rector from 1879-1887). In 1884, twelve similar currency bars also from Milborne St. Andrew were given to the museum by J C M Mansel-Pleydell. (2)

A hoard of at least eighteen Early Iron Age currency bars was found just north of Weatherby Castle, Milborne Stileham (now part of Milborne St. Andrew parish) in or about 1884 and is now in the Dorset County Museum (sixteen and four fragments). Complete or nearly complete bars appear to measure 29 to 31 inches and have a width of 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches; they are described as sword-shaped. (3)
