Full Description

The family of Maltravers held Lytchett at the time of Domesday until the late 14th century when it passed to the Earls of Arundel. By the time of Elizabeth 1 the manor was leased and later purchased by the Trenchard family who made the place their principal residence, at least since the Restoration.

Much of the old house remains, but it has been greatly repaired and altered. Coker maitains that the house was built by the Arundels. <1-2>

The house is still called Lytchett Matravers Manor House. The existing building is of mid-19th century date, and it seems that the earlier house was completely demolished at that time. A stone rubble wall which formed the south face of the wing extending south-east from the main house may be of some antiquity, but most of this wing has been demolished. (It is shown in the 1929 Edn. Of the OS 6", SY 93629620 to SY 93659619).

There are no obvious remains of a Medieval manor house, but the present house may be on the site of the earlier one. The house is now let as a number of flats. <4>

Manor House of two storeys and attics, dating from early to mid 19th century has a probable 18th century east wing of brick and tile. <5>

The main part of the Manor House has been demolished in modern times and only part of the east wing remains; the south wall of which is mainly of late 18th century brick although the lower part is of stone rubble and may be earlier. Now converted into a modern dwelling. <5>

'(2) Manor House (150 yds. N.E.) was built by an Earl of Arundel before the 17th century (Coker, 86) and was afterwards a seat of the Trenchard family. The main part of the house has been pulled down in modern times and only a part of the E. wing remains; it has been completely remodelled and converted into a modern dwelling. The S. wall is mainly of late 18th-century brick but the lower part is of stone rubble and probably older; the N. wall is rendered in stucco and has an 18th-century doorway with timber architrave. The roof is covered with tiles.'
