Full Description
(ST 9102: Middle Street - ST 912022; Crawford - ST 918018 Both sited from auth. 1 fig. 1 and from OS 10000 1978).
Middle Street and Crawford are mentioned in Domesday. It is suggested that Crawford (D.B: Crawford) is to the south-east of Spetisbury village around Crawford bridge, that west end represents the D.B: 'Speteberie', while Middle street, roughly equidistant between the two, represents D.B: Spehtesberie'. Additional evidence for there being 3 settlements exists today in the field boundaries within the parish. Two lines of almost continuous hedges cross the parish from north-east to south-west dividing it in to three unequal areas, with the suggested settlements at the north-east end of these fields. These must be the original land locks of the settlements. (1)
