Full Description

(SY 73719848) An Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure on Dole's Hill is now the nearest recognisable walled or banked enclosure to the castel' which is mentioned in Saxon charter. <1>

On the summit of a ridge at SY 73729848 is a right-angled ploughed down bank, 8.0 metres wide and 0.3 metres high, which resembles a lynchet corner. The sides are approximately 40.0 metres long, fading out to west and north. A single very small sherd of probable I.A. pottery was found near the bank. No conclusion can be reached as to the nature and date of the feature from the visible remains. No survey made on M.S.D. <2>

A rapid examination of air photography shows the enclosure as a bank (possibly with external banks) on top of Dole's Hill. <3>
