Full Description

Three barrows on Charlton Down (ST 8700) were opened by H. White in 1811; the first contained, near the surface, an inhumation, with feet towards east, probably intrustive.

The second contained a primary (?) cremation in an urn and the third contained a primary cremation in an upright globular urn with four preforated lugs (Late Bronze Age); this was in a cist 2 ft. deep and 1 1/2 ft. wide, and the barrow which was about 5 ft. high was composed of alternating layers of
flints and chalk rubble.

Grinsell suggested that tbe group of three barrows (ST 80 SE 30) were probably those opened by White.
