Full Description

At WYTHERSTONE was a free chapel which has long been ruined, probably since the Reformation. In 1547 it was returned as a free chapel in POORSTOCK and alleged to be a rectory; although no divine service was held there. The earliest Patron was the Abbot of ABBOTSBURY, and the list of rectors starts with the date 1308. <1>

Area centred at [SY 53049704] A = [SY 53069703] I believe that one of the fields west of the farm buildings and east of the stream is called chapel close. Old people maintain that services were once held in the south western end of the barn at A - but I cannot vouch for this. <2>

"The field CHAPEL HEY contains no form of building remains, and I know of nothing having been found there to substantiate the possible existence of an early chapel". <3>

Perambulation of CHAPEL HEY revealed no surface indications of possible chapel site, the possibly later (post 16.c) site of this chapel is covered by Dorset 29 SE. 13 SY 09 NW 10. <4>
