Summary

A Neolithic flint or chert axe was found prior to 1940 in a cottage garden near West Moors Station. In 1959 it was in the possession of a Mr WE Wright of Salisbury.

Full Description

Rough AXE or PICK found in a cottage garden near West Moors Station c/o W.E.Wright, 10 Folkestone Road, Salisbury. <1>

Area centred at SU07950335] Found within a short distance of the school at WEST MOORS, and to the East of that building. Name and address of finder unknown, but the implement was given to me c.1940, probably some years after it was found. <2>

Original finder and provenance not ascertained during field work. The implement is in the possession of MR WRIGHT; it is of a chert-like material, 8 1/2 inches long and of ovate section, the maximum diameter being 2 1/2 inches. Heavily flaked, but no attempt at grinding or polishing is visible. In appearance similar to a specimen of axe in the Red House Museum, Christchurch, classified as Neolithic. <3>
