Full Description

Three irregular depressions to the west and south of Peaton's Farm, Lytchett Matravers, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The features comprise an irregular depression to the west of the main farmhouse and two further irregular hollows on the south side of the road to the south of the farmhouse, one larger and one smaller, divided by a hedge boundary. The northernmost of the features is recorded as an old quarry on the OS 1st Edition map [2]. The larger of the other two other depressions, on the south side of the road from the farm, has buildings recorded within it on the OS 1st Edition map. The features are considered likely to be a quarry of post medieval date and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. They are still visible on available Google Earth imagery but are clearly being re-used for other purposes.
