Listed Building record MDO4695 - Parish church of St Nicholas, Silton

The parish church of St Nicholas has walls of coursed, squared rubble with ashlar dressing, and tiled roofs. Fully restored in 1869. Parish Church, late 12th century arcade, 14th and 15th century chancel, south aisle, west tower and north chapel, 17th century north nave wall insert. Chapel entirely of ashlar. Tiled, gable-ended roofs with end stone copings. Diagonal buttresses. Arcade is Romanesque, remainder of church in Perpendicular style.

Parish Church of St. Nicholas, Silton, with walls of rubble and ashlar dressings, has a south arcade of the nave dating from the late 12th century. The chancel was largely rebuilt in the 15th century and the north chapel, west tower, south aisle and south porch are of the early 16th century. The church was restored in 1869. <2>

'(1) THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS (Plate 62) stands near the centre of the parish. The walls are of rubble with ashlar dressings, and in places wholly ashlar-faced; the roofs are tiled. The S. arcade of the Nave is of the late 12th century; the Chancel was largely rebuilt in the 15th century; the North Chapel, the West Tower, the South Aisle and the South Porch are of the early 16th century. For a descrption and sketch of the church in 1820, see T.D. Powell, Topographical Collections (B.M.Add.MS.17459),f.121. The church was restored in 1869. The N. chapel and the 17th-century monument of Sir Hugh Wyndham are the most noteworthy features.'
