Full Description
Banked linear boundaries at Newton Peveril, Sturminster Marshall, are visible as earthworks on current Environment Agency lidar imagery [1]. The features align with historic field boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and complete a series of narrow linear plots to the rear of Newton Peveril Manor. On the west side, rows of trees shown on the OS 1st Edition map correspond with two of the linear features, suggesting field boundaries removed by the late 19th century [2]. They are considered likely to be historic field boundaries of potentially medieval date, possibly even fossilising part of a former medieval strip field, and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
