Full Description
A loose arrangement of three rectilinear banked mounds to the south of Almer, Sturminster Marshall, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. The features are broadly between 10m and 13m in size, and on an aerial photograph date 1947 they are shown as bare mounds, one having a slightly hollowed centre to it. They are recorded on an OS map dated 1955 where they are shown to contain trees [3]. The features are located within fields on the north side of the River Winterborne but are of uncertain date or function, although post medieval to early 20th century drainage features is possible. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
