Full Description
An elongated irregular hollow up to 75m long by up to 39m wide, to the south of Mapperton, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. Two banked linear boundaries enclose the north side. The feature is shown but not named on the OS 1st Edition map and a smaller extent than is visible on lidar imagery is recorded as a pond on an OS map dated 1955 [3, 4]. It is considered likely to be a post medieval chalk pit re-used as a pond. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
