Summary

A circular hollow to the east of Mapperton, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery. The feature is shown but not named on the OS 1st Edition map. It is considered likely to be an old chalk pit, but it is situated within an area of deserted medieval settlement and could alternatively be a pond of medieval to post medieval date. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description

A circular hollow to the east of Mapperton, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. The feature is shown but not named on the OS 1st Edition map [3]. It is considered likely to be an old chalk pit, but it is situated within an area of deserted medieval settlement and could alternatively be a pond of medieval to post medieval date. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
