Full Description

Church dedicated to St Nicholas, but united to Chaldon Herring by consent of the abbot of Bindon, circa 1446. There are no remains, but during building at the homestead (? Chaldon Boys; SY 78 SE 17), a large quantity of human bones were discovered on the west of the dwelling-house, so many that it is likely to be the site of the cemetery of the church. <1>

The site of this alleged church was pointed out on the ground by Mrs Cobb, of "Chaldon Boys", and she stated that large blocks of cut stone had been dug up there in the past, (SY 77838295). None of these blocks was available for inspection, having been buried or carted away. Mrs Cobb confirmed the statement in authy. 1 that bones from the supposed churchyard had been reported, but stated the site to be at 'A' (SY 77798295), north-west of the house. Both sites under grass i.e. church and churchyard. The present church of St Nicholas (OS 6" 1903) is at SY 79008311. <2>
