Summary

A ditched and banked linear feature to the southwest of Stag Gate Wood, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and current Environment lidar imagery. The feature runs from the southwest side of the field to the northeast side and strikes a line through a row of probable Bronze Age barrows. It runs across and perpendicular to linear banked earthworks associated with a probable later prehistoric field system. The feature is likely to be a trackway, either of later prehistoric date, or alternatively medieval to post medieval date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description

Linear ditch probably Late Bronze Age or Iron Age seen as a cropmark on 2007 aerial photography. <1> (SY 9289 9890). This ditch crosses part of charborough deer park appearing to follow the line of three ring ditches.

A ditched and banked linear feature to the southwest of Stag Gate Wood, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and current Environment lidar imagery <2-4>. The feature runs from the southwest side of the field to the northeast side - on the southwest side it corresponds with the end of a trackway or lane , visible on a 1947 aerial photograph <2>, that follows the line of a historic field boundary recorded on historic OS mapping. Within the field, it strikes a line through a row of probable Bronze Age barrows. It appears to run across and perpendicular to linear banked earthworks associated with a probable later prehistoric field system, visible on lidar imagery <4>. The feature is likely to be a trackway, either of later prehistoric date, or alternatively medieval to post medieval date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
