Full Description
Linear ditch probably Late Bronze Age or Iron Age seen as a cropmark on 2007 aerial photography. <1> (SY 9289 9890). This ditch crosses part of charborough deer park appearing to follow the line of three ring ditches.
A ditched and banked linear feature to the southwest of Stag Gate Wood, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and current Environment lidar imagery <2-4>. The feature runs from the southwest side of the field to the northeast side - on the southwest side it corresponds with the end of a trackway or lane , visible on a 1947 aerial photograph <2>, that follows the line of a historic field boundary recorded on historic OS mapping. Within the field, it strikes a line through a row of probable Bronze Age barrows. It appears to run across and perpendicular to linear banked earthworks associated with a probable later prehistoric field system, visible on lidar imagery <4>. The feature is likely to be a trackway, either of later prehistoric date, or alternatively medieval to post medieval date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
