Full Description

Banked and ditched linear features, part of a possible watercourse and two possible sluice house to the south and north of Fox Covert, extending into Morden and Sturminster Marshall Parishes, are visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s aerial photographs and current Environment Agency lidar imagery [1-4].

The features comprise a series of interlinking linear ditches and part of a hollowed out watercourse, of probable natural origin but bounded by linear banks on either side, possibly medieval/post medieval field boundaries. A small rectilinear structure on the north bank of the watercourse may be a sluice house. A further square structure on the west side of the features, with a circular feature atop this, may be a further sluice house or drainage-related structure. The features are considered likely to be drainage features, possibly doubling as field boudaries in places, that form part of a post medieval drainage system. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
