Due to the proposed building extension to the rear of the Shaftesbury Musem Gold Hill the local Historical Society kindly allowed us to keep a watching brief together with an exploratory excavation. The excavation 3 metres South of the Buttress of St Peters Church, 1.5 metres East of the Museum revealed a 'pit' at a depth of 75 cm. Between 1 metre and 1.5 meters in depth a section ofsandston arch springing was exposed. The excavation was terminated at this depth for safety reasons.
