Summary

The site of a Royal Observer Corps monitoring post. The site was built as part of an extensive network of posts designed to confirm and report hostile aircraft and nuclear attacks on the United Kingdom. The post was opened in June 1959 and was closed in October 1968. The site was found to be in a poor condition by the time of the Defence of Britain survey. The site was located underground on the north side of Copse Hill beside an entrance to a farm yard.

Full Description

A Royal Observer Corps monitoring post. The site is located in or near to The Old Higher Lighthouse (listed building 381999) on the Isle of Portland. The site was built as part of an extensive network of posts designed to confirm and report hostile aircraft and nuclear attacks on the United Kingdom. The majority of these sites were built between 1956 and 1964, although their construction began after 1925 and continued into the early 1970s. At the time of the Defence of Britain survey (1995-2002) this site was found to remain in an uncertain condition. <1-3>
