Monument record MDO46294 - Stones, Portesham Hill

(Centred at SY60828691) "40 or more stones". <1>

Built into the stone wall are four large flat stones, and there are two large irregularly shaped boulders on the ground depicted on O.S. plans. These stones measure 2.5m x 1.5m, and 1.3m above the ground; and 2.0m x 1.5m and 0.5m above the ground. A modern farm track runs between the boulders. To the north of this track are five small stones, one loose and near the gateway, the others almost buried. All are of conglomerate. The stones form no paticular pattern, and now the site is also used for stone dumps as a result of field clearance, which may obscure some stones. There is however no evidence that the site is connected in any way with an antiquity; there is no trace of a mound in the area. The stones could be refuse from the several small quarries in the area. <2>
