Full Description

(SY515910. Stirt DMV sited from auth 1 and OS 10560 1968) Deserted Medieval hamlet of Stirt, first mentioned in Domesday, very much reduced by ploughing. Trace of road and slight banks and, until recently, of house platform adjacent to and N. of St Luke's Chapel (SY 59 SW 12). Two house platforms occur nearby at SY522904. The chapel area may have been the centre of Stirt, which appears to have been divided up at n early stage in its history. <1>

In 1664, the Hearch Tax records there being 8 dwellings. The present bridleways and footpaths comform to the old street plan. Substantial remains of a house shown on the first OS map were uncovered following ploughing. <2>
