Coins of Commodus, Diocletian and Constantine reported from Barton Hill. May be connected with antiquarian reports of finds of Roman pottery and supposedly Roman architectural fragments from the general area. Possible Roman and Medieval pottery found in the area of market gardens to the west of the Abbey Stew Ponds and south-south-east of Layton House.

Description from NRHE 206493:
Centred ST 863226 (2) "Mr. N. Teulon Porter reports that since 1946 surface finds of Romano British Medieval and later pottery etc; have been made in the area now used as market gardens, west of the Abbey Stew Ponds, and south-south-east of Layton House. <4-5>

A cursory inspection revealed many sherds of Medieval and later pottery but no identifiable Romano-British ware. <6>

'Roman pottery' found with Medieval sherds south-south-east of Layton House (ST 864227). <2>

Coins of Commodus, Diocletian, and Constantine are reported from Barton Hill (868231); 'Roman pottery' found with medieval sherds S.S.E. of Layton House (864227) could be connected with this site (Hutchins III, 80; Dorset Procs., LXXI (1949), 67). It is claimed that 'architectural remains of the Doric order' were found here (W.A.M., VII (1862), 252).'
