They are between 15m and 22m across and considered likely to be post medieval chalk pits; they were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour Catchment AI&M Project.

Two small hollows are visible as earthworks on lidar imagery in the fields to the north of East Down Lodge, Winterborne Whitechurch <1>.
