Full Description

The manor of Bere was of royal demense and included the former forest of Bere, now Bere Wood (centred SY 867952), which is mentioned during the reign of John (1199-1216). (see also SY 89 SW 34 - for royal palace). In 1259 the manor was granted by Henry III to Simon de Montfort and therefore
ceased to be a royal forest. In 1269 a moiety of the manor including the 'wood of Bere' was granted to the abbess of Tarrant. <1>

Taylor stated that the making of some of the irregular enclosed field surrounding Chamberlayne's Farm (SY 845923) Stockley Farms, (SY 856919), Philliol's Farm (SY 863916) and Hyde House (SY 870905) in Bere Regis are recorded in the mid-13th century Forest Eyres. These list fines paid for the enclosing of fields from the waste, this area then being within the royal Forest.<2>
