Full Description

A linear avenue of trees ending at a small earthwork mound on the north side of Notting Hill, Sturminster Marshall, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs [1, 2, 3]. A trackway and gazebo are documented on the OS 1st Edition map [4]. The trackway doews not quite equate with the tree-lined avenue and it is not certain whehter this is pre or post the late 19th century, although nothing on later available maps suggest a later feature. The features may therefore be part of a post medieval ornamental landscape. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The features have been partially destroyed by later quarrying but the northern end of the avenue may survive to some extent, as suggested on 2021 APGB imagery [5].
