Full Description
Post medieval extractive pits and trackways on Beacon Hill, Corfe Mullen, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1, 2]. The features are first documented on the OS 3rd Edition map, which shows the main trackway into the pit from the north as a tramway. A further section of tramway and a kiln are shown in the southwest section of the feature [3]. The pit is named on the OS a5Epoch map dated 1955 as Corfe Mullen Clay Pit - this documents the kiln as 'old kiln' and the tramways are not marked by this time [4]. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The pit is now absorbed within the Beacon Hill Works.
