Full Description

A post medieval extractive pit at Cherrett's Clump, Corfe Mullen, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The feature extends over an area of over 150 by 100m and includes several trackways leading into it from the southwest. It is documented as a sand pit on the OS Epoch a5 1:2500 map dated 1955 [2]. It does not appear on older OS historic mapping. The feature is located within an area of sand, clay and gravels geology. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The feature is still visible as an earthwork on 2021 APGB imagery but is re-purposed; the trackways are no longer visible [3].
