Full Description
A post medieval extractive pit to the southwest of Sandpit Farm, Lytchett Matravers, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The feature is located within a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.. The feature is still visible as a cropmark on 2005 Google Earth imagery [2].
