Monument record MDO45573 - Post medieval extractive pits, Lytchett Matravers

A cluster of post medieval extractive pits to the north of Boker's Farm, Lytchett Matravers, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The cluster of pits are located within a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. A separate feature to the southwest (MDO45572) is documented as a sand pit on the OS 1st and 2nd Edition maps. One of the group of features is shown but not named on the 2nd and 3rd Edition OS maps. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

The features are no longer visible on 2022 Google Earth imagery, although some may survive below vegetation [5].
