Full Description
A cluster of post medieval extractive pits to the west of Crumpet's Farm,Lytchett Matravers, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1, 2]. The cluster of pits are located within a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area, including a pit 45m to the south documented as an old clay pit (MDO45567). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. Some of the features are still visible on 2021 APGB imagery [3].
