Monument record MDO45558 - Possible post medieval extractive pits, Sturminster Marshall

Two possible post medieval extractive pits to the west of Crumpet's Farm, Sturminster Marshall, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The pits follow a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The features are represented but not named on the OS 1-3 Edition maps. On the OS Epoch a5 map they are shown as ponds. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
