Full Description
A large irregular post medieval extractive pit up to 87m long by up to 47m wide on Barrow Hill, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The feature is within an area of sand, silt and clay geology and is documented on the OS 1st Edition map as a gravel pit and on the OS 2nd Edition map as an old gravel pit [3, 4]. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The feature is still visible on 2002 Google Earth imagery [2].
